In the fall of 1996 my daughter, Jill, began taking riding lessons at a German riding school near our home in Biersdorf, Germany.  It was here on a quiet Sunday afternoon I would be introduced to a group of horses who would capture my passion; cause the life long learner in me to question not only what they were but would drive me to find answers to the who, what, when, where and how answers to the questions that filled my inquiring mind.

Rudy, Jill’s riding instructor invited us to a horse show.  It was actually an exhibition of a team of horses he was beginning to promote in Germany.  When the arena door opened and Rudy’s young daughter entered riding the most beautiful horse I had ever seen my life was forever changed.

The horse was brown and white with extreme mane, tail and feather.  When he moved he appeared to float; hair was everywhere producing a fairytale aura.  Rudy had begun importing horses from gypsies in England for his riding school.  He found them extremely manageable and trustworthy for novice riders who came for equestrian vacations or horse camps.

While I had seen the black and white or brown and white little riding horses, they were not like these beauties he introduced at the Sunday show.  My search and study to understand the many differences in horses bred by gypsies has brought me to Belle Rose Farm and a commitment to the Gypsy Vanner Horse.

Our mare Magic was purchased from Rudy for my daughter, Jill.  We bought her as a three year old.  She has matured into a heavy, traditional mare standing 15 hands. Rudy was unable to find out any breeding information on her.  Her background therefore is listed as “Foundation Stock”.  She is an intelligent, willing horse with a desire to please.  Her two foals are beautiful examples of the breed and reflect the solid genetics she must possess.

(See her foals on our “Foals” page.)

Jan Anderson delivered Ambrosia to Carliss in June 2005.  Ambrosia had just turned three in May of that year.  Ambrosia is a daughter of the stallion Black Baird who is a son of The Kent Horse.  She is out of a Robert Watson mare, Godiva.  Carliss says that Ambrosia has the best of temperaments.  She is sweet, kind, and gentle.  According to Carliss, “You can do anything with this mare.”  Ambrosia is in foal to our stallion, Babes for a March 2010 foal.

Ambrosia is a lovely Vanner mare.  She does love to eat!
